Eucharistic Miracle in Cascia, Italy

In 1330 in the small city of Cascia, Italy, a local priest was summoned to give Holy Communion to a gravely ill peasant. Instead of properly carrying the consecrated Host in the ciborium, the priest irreverently and carelessly placed Jesus within a prayer book. When he entered the peasant’s room and opened the prayer book he was astonished to see that the Host was transformed into a clot of blood and the pages of the prayer book were marked with blood. Confused and penitent, the priest went to the Augustinian Priory of Siena to ask the counsel of Fr. Simone Fidati of Cascia, who granted him pardon and asked to keep the pages marked by the Precious Blood. Documentation on the relic has been collected over the centuries that provides additional details regarding the miracle.

In the Communal Statues of Cascia of 1387, it was ordered that “every year on the Feast of Corpus Christi, the authorities, the counsels, and the people of Cascia should meet in the Church of St. Augustine and follow the priest, who should carry the venerable relic of the Most Holy Body of Christ in procession through the city.” The year 2030 will mark the seventh centenary of the event. The Relic of the Eucharistic Miracle is kept in the Basilica of St. Rita, in Cascia, to this day.
