Why Pray the Holy Face Chaplet?

This chaplet was originally revealed by Jesus to Sr. Marie of St. Peter, a Carmelite nun of Tours in France during the early 1800’s. Pope Leo XIII approved the devotion in 1885. Its purpose was to make reparation for sins against three commandments: 1) denial of God, 2) blasphemy, and 3) the profanation of Sundays and Holy Days.

The Archdiocese of Denver has adopted this chaplet to be prayed for a successful Eucharistic Revival by the parishes in Colorado at least weekly, and daily if possible. It is a spiritual weapon to provide defense from the attacks of the devil on our attempts to reignite devotion and fervor for the Eucharist throughout our faith community.

The prayer invokes the name of the Lord and compels His enemies to flee: “Arise, O Lord! And let them that hate Thee flee from Thy Face”, taken from Psalm 68. Even St. Athanasius said the devil hated those words and had no choice but to retreat

The Holy Face Chaplet is prayed over 39 beads, 6 single beads and 33 grouped beads. The latter represent the 33 earthly years of Jesus’ life. The first 3 single beads represent the 30 years of Jesus' hidden life on earth. Then 5 groups of six beads each represent the senses of touch, hearing, sight, smell, and taste through which our Lord’s Holy Face suffered during His Passion.

Pray with us!

We will soon start praying the Holy Face Chaplet daily, directly after morning Mass and Liturgy of the Hours. All are invited to stay and participate in this short 5 minute chaplet. Handouts are available on the credence table in the back of the church.

Still not convinced? Did you know that this devotion so inspired St Therese that her full title was Sr. Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face?
